What exactly is LACAP?
LACAP is: LACAPacidad or Latin American Community Art Project
Currently established in El Polvo, el Salvador
How do I apply to be a resident artist, and teacher?
Easy, just email LACAP for an application, request it at lacapacidad@gmail.com .
Then, fill out the application along with extra information describing specific interests and aspirations and send it back to the same email. Your acceptance will depend on vacancy, schedule, experience, and a clear specific goal.
How long is the participation?
We organize the workshops by sessions; each session is three to four weeks living, working and teaching in El Polvo.
What do the sessions consist of?
Sessions consist of teaching workshops, assisting workshops, developing personal projects, group trips, hosting events. If not posted on the website, please contact us to get the “session dates” to know what time frames are scheduled at the moment.
Where do artists generally stay?
LACAP participants stay at a two-story house in the center of the village. The first floor is where the workspace is located. The dormitory is located on the second floor. It will be a communal setting where participants live together and share the chores of the house.
About how many artists visit LACAP in the summer?
There is space for 8 participants at a time (each session). But it can become a full house during overlapping sessions.
Does each artist receive a studio space?
Studio space depends on the amount of participants that need it. Not everyone request studio space, so please specify on the LACAP application.
How long is the workshop?
Each workshop class is 2-3 hours long, four days a week, usually Monday-Thursday.
How would I be involved, and what would I be expected (or allowed) to contribute to workshops, or other aspects of the program?
It is important that you consider El Salvador current issues for any of your projects/workshops and organize a project that can benefit both the community and yourself as an artist. For example, during the Summer 2006, people were interested in issues of consumerism; we used this theme with the artwork from the workshops of photography, silkscreen and embroidery etc.
You can contribute to LACAP by:
1. You can run a workshop
LACAP already introduced some workshops listed in the workshop page. But if you have an idea for a workshop not listed, write a proposal and a lesson plan and send it along with the application.
2. You can come and work in a personal project (ei. Writing, research, engineering etc). As well as translating or assisting a specific workshop with your knowledge.
Are there any fees or costs involved?
There is a small fee to cover you own and communal livning expenses. The fee is for all expenses per person during their stay. It covers food (ei. Rice, beans, tortillas, veggies, drinking water tanks, chicken, bread, fruit, etc, etc). The fee also includes all utilities in the house like water, gas and electricity. Other random things we might need, like transportation tip, and hiring temporary cooks on very busy days. When necessary and if available, it also covers materials, and day trips to eat out. The fee is $50 USD a week.
What if I can't stay for both sessions?
It is not obligatory to stay both sessions. It is up to you and your means to choose which session you want to participate in, but be aware that the space is limited. Since the workshop classes are four times a week you can do some traveling when you are off and use the LACAP building as a place to come back to. There has been some group traveling before; but the more time you stay in El Salvador, the more time you'll have to develop your own project and/or travel.
How does traveling from the United States to El Salvador work? Do I find my own way, or are there organized groups of volunteers that travel together, etc.?
Unfortunately, LACAP, has limited funds and cannot provide airfare. You will arrive at the International Airport in El Salvador, COMALAPA, which is near the capital, San Salvador. We will pick you up at the airport, which is three and a half hours away from El Polvo. In most occasions, travel dates match up and participants organize their arrival and departure as a group. We encourage you to organize yourself with other people to arrive on the same day and also split the cost of the van. Participants will arrive at the Salvadoran airport and will be picked up by a LACAP representative. The taxi trip in a van is $80 to El Polvo. Groups will help split the cost of the transportation, the ride helps to get rid of the stress of traveling and carrying heavy luggage. Sometimes a person might come alone because of different schedules; in that case, we can arrange someone to go get you and take the chicken buses to El Polvo. The chicken buses are significantly cheaper ($10-$15) but uncomfortable and it will take much longer because it makes local stops.
Do I need a visa or other travel arrangements?
You do not need a visa because you will be coming as a tourist and you will not be staying more than 90 days. BUT PLEASE, DO BRING YOUR PASSPORT. If you do not have one yet, start acquiring one now.
